Disha Prabhu

 
 

Disha Prabhu received her Bachelor’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, India. After graduating, she applied to the graduate program in Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of Mississippi, and is currently a PhD candidate in the division of Pharmacology in the department of BioMolecular Sciences.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2015-Present)

Mentor: Dr. Nicole M. Ashpole

Under Dr. Ashpole’s mentorship, she focuses on examining the effects of age-related decline in IGF-1 signaling on the ability of astrocytes to carry out their functions in the aging brain. For this, both in vitro and in vivo models, and a range of molecular and behavioral assays are utilized.

Additionally, she also received a research grant from the Graduate Student Council (GSC) at Ole Miss. For that, her work involved screening compounds like anthocyanins for neuroprotective activity in cells that were exposed to amyloid beta (Aβ-42) and other stressors like TNF-alpha, hydrogen peroxide, etc.

Before joining the Ashpole lab, she worked under Dr. Tracy Brooks’s guidance, on optimizing a nucleic acid clamp for selective modulation or stabilization of non-canonical DNA structures called G-Quadruplexes for therapeutic targeting of cancer and neurodegeneration.
